ModSeat – Modular Light Rail Seat is taking shape at MCG

The ModSeat consortium began activities in November 2016 with a very clear objective in mind: to design and produce an innovative, modular, versatile and customizable regional and inter-city train seat using new materials and processes. Now, the project is in a decisive phase, with MCG mind for metal playing a key role in building the first prototype of the ModSeat.

With MCG’s R&D team highly involved in the process, the project is now entering the prototype construction phase, completed all structural calculations and material tests, and finished the product specifications phase, in October 2017, as we highlighted before.

Modseat’s rapid prototyping is all pre-checking the functionalities of each part to ensure faster validations and lower costs. Producing molds and tooling allow the manufacturing of the components that, once assembled, will integrate the final prototype. Later in 2019, this phase will lead to the testing of materials and seat components based on the most adverse stresses identified during simulation and structural dimensioning. Functional testing is carried out on the prototype that seeks to replicate the anthropometric characteristics of the passengers in the use-cases that explore the seat’s functions.

The ModSeat consortium is composed of MCG mind for metal and four other entities with equal importance in the project: Instituto Superior Técnico, Almadesign, a company in the area of industrial design, SETsa – Sociedade de Engenharia e Transformação SA and ERT, a multinational of the automotive supply chain with industrial facilities in Portugal, Czech Republic and Romania. The know-how and technological capabilities of these organizations in the railway segment have a clear and effective demonstration in the ModSeat project.
