Developed at MCG between 2018 and 2019, the Safe Behaviors project aimed to establish Safety as a priority at all levels, working on the most relevant factor: people.
Positive results began to emerge the very next year and are still observed today: Safety is and will always remain MCG’s top priority.
Ludgero Feiteira, from LTM Consultoria, was the external coordinator of this project, working together with MCG’s Safety team. Now he tells us about the “foundations of the Safety culture” that already exists at MCG.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in the Safe Behaviors project at MCG?
MCG is a great organization. With different activities, leaders, and even factories. Any system, Safety in this matter, must have simple and transversal practices for the entire organization, to work long term.
This is typically more difficult in large companies, where heterogeneity between different areas is bigger.
Do you feel that there is a true Safety culture at MCG nowadays?
There is clear evidence that the Safety culture is making its way at MCG. This matter is still very much alive internally and the Safety culture is taking root, it does not depend on external consultants.
I can give you an example that shows us just that. I know that at this moment MCG offers all Employees a firm online training platform, with several Safety courses, including the “Safe Behaviors” training itself.
Any employee has access to this tool and many of them already use it. How many national and even multinational companies will have access to this type of resource?! Very few. All of this reflects an organizational commitment to a Safety culture.
What is the importance of MCG Employees here?
I have always felt a very familiar and close atmosphere at MCG. People truly know each other. Therefore, the focus on Safety is not a vogue or a slogan.
It’s a company’s concern for its people. Many employees have always been there, have grown, and helped the company to grow. People get the message; more than that, they agree with the message.
Is there another key factor that makes a difference?
MCG has the top of the organization focused on security. This is noticeable from the beginning. On the first day of the project, I took a picture of a part of a poster on Safety that says “The Safety of our Employees is more important than the customer, the cost and the shareholder”.
Then, throughout the project, I witnessed decisions that were consistent with this sentence. This is the key factor. The focus on Safety is not a vogue or a slogan. It’s a company’s concern for its people.
