Project problem/motivation
The term Additive Manufacturing (AM) encompasses many technologies, including 3D printing, Rapid Prototyping (RP), Digital Direct Production (DDM), layered manufacturing, and additive manufacturing. AM is now used to manufacture metal products for final application in aircraft, railways and automobiles.
The solution to achieve
The SLM-XL project is based on the development of an AM machine for larger metal parts using a specific technology – the SLM. This is a technology that uses a high power density laser to join metallic powders by melting them, thus delivering a solid piece in 3D.
