The evolution of the automotive industry is inevitably driven by the digitalization, automation and integration of new technologies into production processes. It is within this context that the Drivolution project emerges – a mobilizing agenda that brings together around 40 entities and includes 20 sub-projects, to develop the factory of the future model.
As part of the Drivolution consortium, MCG is directly involved in the development of advanced technological solutions, with a strong focus on the application of artificial intelligence, computer vision and industrial automation.
Innovation applied to industrial production
Within the scope of the Drivolution agenda, MCG is developing automatic inspection systems for stamped and welded components, based on artificial intelligence and computer vision.
These systems will be implemented across different production environments, including 3,300-ton stamping presses and robotic welding lines. They are being developed in partnership with the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal and NOVA FCT, with the participation of Introsys.
Each system integrates a range of sensors and cameras capable of detecting surface defects in produced parts, performing dimensional control and monitoring critical process variables.
This approach enables fast and accurate in-line product quality assessment, contributing to waste reduction and production optimisation.
In addition to automatic inspection, MCG is also developing predictive maintenance models and augmented reality applications to support operators.
These solutions enable the anticipation of failures, improve operational efficiency and support teams on the shop floor, reinforcing the reliability of production processes.
As part of the ongoing development of the project, a new solution has been introduced within the Drivolution agenda: an automatic palletizing system at the output of stamping presses.
This system enables the automatic transfer of stamped components from the conveyor to the container, complementing the previously planned computer vision-based inspection system.
With this integration, MCG further strengthens the automation of production flows and reduces the need for manual intervention, increasing process efficiency and consistency.
PRR funding
The Drivolution agenda is funded by the European Union under the NextGeneration EU programme, through the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
This project represents an important step in the transformation of the automotive industry in Portugal, contributing to a more technological, sustainable and competitive sector.
